Hewlett-Packard said it has invested $50 million in Hortonworks as part of a broad integration pact aimed at big data analytics customers.

Hortonworks provides an enterprise version of Apache Hadoop for big data analytics applications. Hortonworks competes with the likes of Cloudera as well as EMC's Pivotal.

Under the strategic pact, Hortonworks Data Platform will be integrated with HP's HAVEn big data software.

The two companies will integrate engineering strategies, collaborate on sales and make it easier for HP customers to adopt Hortonworks. In a nutshell, Hortonworks will be the Hadoop portion of HP's HAVEn platform. HP will also certify its Vertica applications with Apache Hadoop YARN, which is the centerpiece of the next version of Hadoop.

Vertica is one of HP's fastest growing businesses.

For Hortonworks, HP gives it a massive sales channel and builds on a 2013 reseller deal. HP gets Hadoop expertise as well as integration with a company that would make a logical acquisition at some point.

In addition, HP said CTO Martin Fink will sit on Hortonworks board of directors.
