Ink The Everyday Liquid That Costs $5,000.00 Per Litre

Next time you go to change your printer cartridge you may want to think about squeezing out every last drop before tossing it in the bin.

A comparison of common liquids converted to their price per litre has revealed printer ink is more expensive than Chanel No 5 perfume and almost 20 times as expensive as ritzy champagne.

At $24.95 for a standard black HP printer cartridge with 4.5ml of ink on board, the price works out to a whopping $5544 per litre.

The colour cartridge, which carries slightly more ink at 6.5ml, comes to $5654 per litre.

Other major brands of printer ink are not far off the same price and many are more expensive.

The reason why ink costs so much is because of the printing industry’s "razor blades" business model — they sell the printers cheap, but make money on the cartridges.

Some printing companies go to great lengths to prevent others cutting into the market, even installing microchips into the cartridges that interact with the printer and verify its authenticity.

When it comes down to it, printer ink is one of the most expensive liquids any of us will ever spend money on.

We’ve put together this infographic to show how it compares to several everyday items, and a few fancy ones.
