Kodak deeper into digital printing with Heidelberg Digital and NexPress
Eastman Kodak Co. is again dipping into its treasury to acquire printing businesses with an eye toward boosting revenue and offsetting declines in consumer film.

…Rochester’s largest employer on Monday said that it would absorb two new businesses in the fast-changing field of commercial printing. The transaction is unusual in that it will require no money up front.

Kodak has agreed to purchase Heidelberg Digital LLC and the remaining 50 percent of its partnership in NexPress Solutions from Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG of Germany.

The deal brings Kodak virtually full-circle in the printing business. Five years ago, Kodak sold its office copier division to Heidelberg to stem a sudden onset of financial losses. The largest piece of that deal was a black-and-white digital copier-printer that will again become part of Kodak’s business portfolio.

Spokesman Gerard Meuchner said Kodak is buying back a fully operational business built around the printer, complete with distribution partners. At the time of the sale, the copier-printer was just reaching the market.
