Lady Gaga’s Office Depot Partnership Slammed by Florida Family Association for Promoting Homosexuality

The culture trolls at the Florida Family Association are at it again.
Office Depot announced a back-to-school partnership with Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation, but the FFA is worried that this "will influence many teens to embrace homosexuality for their lifetime who may have otherwise worked through their crisis with straight results."

This is probably something they don’t really believe, but they are desperate for your attention, please.Gaga’s Born This Way aims to "foster a more accepting society, where differences are embraced and individuality is celebrated." It’s not specifically about gay rights, but rather seeks to celebrate all sorts of differences. (And Gaga probably doesn’t mind that this boosts her popularity and connection with her fans, but, you know, whatever.)

Office Depot will donate at least $1 million to the foundation by donating 25 percent of profits from an array of limited edition back-to-school products, which will include:

"Kindness Sticks" Post-It Notes, limited-edition Sharpie pens, and unique "Bravery Bracelets." These back-to-school products feature the Born This Way Foundation’s logo, as well as one of six messages from Lady Gaga: "Be Brave," "Be Amazing," "Be Yourself," "Be Kind," "Be Accepting," and "Be Involved."

The Florida Family Association, the group behind Florida’s gay marriage and civil unions ban, is not pleased:

Thousands of kids who might have otherwise worked through their pubescent sexual identity issues will be inspired to accept the wrong choice based upon this unscientific, emotionally charged propaganda.

What’s brave or kind about telling thousands of sexually frustrated teens that they were Born This Way when a high percentage of them would have ended up taking the straight heterosexual path for life?

Please urge Office Depot to rescind their one million dollar pledge to Lady Gaga’s Born this Way Foundation.

The organization’s argument is, of course, all based upon selective pseudo-science. Even still, could you imagine anyone actually deciding to turn gay because they bought a pack of Lady Gaga "Be Brave" Post-it notes?

"I’m so proud to make you my wife," says the young man with a slight lisp and an impeccably fitted suit on his wedding day. "And to think, if I would have bought that ‘Be Yourself’ Sharpie marker at Office Depot I might not have ended up not taking the straight heterosexual path for life."

Of course, groups like the FFA are ridiculous. They know picking a silly fight with a superstar like Lady Gaga will guarantee them lots of attention (and here we are giving it to them, damn it), and hopefully get them a few more donations or what not from bored bigots surfing the internet as opposed to some other anti-gay organization with a friendly sounding name.

Given all the FFA’s ridiculous stunts and culture trolling in the past, we’re not even sure if their aim is to push their beliefs so much as it is to get attention and gain more prominence in the crowded conservative cultural-warrior sphere. Because we don’t think anyone reading their nonsensical tirades who doesn’t already agree with them is going to be won over.

While science hasn’t been able to pinpoint a reason why people are gay, scientist certainly agreed that gay people don’t suddenly turn straight. Even a prominent "ex-gay" group recently admitted that you really can’t stop someone from having a same-sex orientation. So, yeah, trying to pull Lady Gaga Post-it notes from Office Depot probably won’t stop anyone from being who they are.

And it’s ridiculous that we have to point this out in the first place since this promotion isn’t explicitly pro-gay. The merchandise being hawked just says stuff like "Be Involved," "Be Kind" and "Be Brave," which seem to be pretty close to some basic tenants of the Bible.
