Lexmark’s Perceptive Software Building New Headquarters

Sep 2012– Lexmark International’s Perceptive Software business broke ground this week on a new headquarters in Kansas. The company is moving its main offices from the Kansas City suburb of Shawnee to nearby Lenexa.

The 240,000-square-foot, two-building facility will more than double the size of the company’s current headquarters, which opened in 2005. The company now has three times as many employees as it did then, according to a statement.

"This new global headquarters will be representative of the progressive company culture that has been vital to the growth of Perceptive Software," said Scott Coons, CEO of Perceptive Software and a vice president of Lexmark.

Lexmark, which is based in Lexington, acquired Perceptive Software in 2010 and has since made a number of similar acquisitions as it seeks to expand more into computer software and services.

"This new headquarters for Perceptive in Lenexa confirms the growth and the future promise of Perceptive and Lexmark, as the companies grow together to offer unique end-to-end solutions that our competitors simply cannot," Lexmark CEO Paul Rooke said in a statement.

Perceptive Software hopes to complete the new headquarters by spring 2014.

Among its features will be a dodgeball court that will allow the company to continue to host its annual "Dodge for a Cause" tournament that raises funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The site will also include the original Perceptive Software slide that will be moved from the current headquarters. The company has not announced what it will do with its current headquarters.

Market capitalization is an important data point for investors to keep an eye on, for various reasons. The most basic reason is that it gives a true comparison of the value attributed by the stock market to a given company’s stock. Many beginning investors look at one stock trading at $10 and another trading at $20 and mistakenly think the latter company is worth twice as much — that of course is a completely meaningless comparison without knowing how many shares of each company exist. But comparing market capitalization (factoring in those share counts) creates a true “apples-to-apples” comparison of the value of two stocks. In the case of Lexmark International, Inc. (NYSE: LXK), the market cap is now $1.67 billion, versus Alpha Natural Resources Inc (NYSE: ANR) at $1.63 billion.
