Laser Printer Sales Take Off in European Retail Channel
Laser Printer sales in the retail channel in the UK, France and Germany grew by 41.5 percent in the first half of 2004 compared to the same period a year ago, according to figures published by Context.

The growth, says Context, was most marked in the UK and in France, with year-on-year growth rates of 55.3% and 93.3% respectively, while Germany, where the retail channel has been traditionally stronger, saw growth of 28.5%.

Context’s SalesWatch research, tracking sales of business and consumer technology products through indirect channels of distribution in Europe, revealed that the retail channel represented 12.0% of laser printer sales in the first half of 2004 in the UK, France and Germany, compared to 9.9% in the same period of 2003. Retail sales in these three countries have now eclipsed sales in the mail order channel, which represented 11.7% (down from 12.6% a year ago). Germany continues to lead the way, with the retail channel accounting for 17.6% of laser printer sales, compared with the UK at 9.6% and France at 6.4%.

With the total laser printer market in the UK, France and Germany growing by 17.3% in the first half of 2004 in comparison with the same period of 2003, all channels saw growth in this time-frame, in addition to the 41.5% year-on-year growth of the retail channel. The corporate channel saw growth of 10.7%, despite a decline of 1.9% in France, the local reseller channel grew by 17.2%, and the mail order channel grew by 8.8%, offset by a decline of 20.7% in Germany.
