2 sentenced in ink cartridge theft

TROY — Two men found guilty last month of stealing computer printer ink cartridges from an office supply store in North Greenbush were sentenced to state prison terms Tuesday.A jury March 27 found both Daniel Dellisanti, 31, and George A. Athanasatos, 52, guilty of grand larceny and burglary.Dellisanti was sentenced by Judge Robert M. Jacon to 1 to 4 years in prison and Athanasatos was sentenced to 2 to 7 years in prison. Their previous addresses were not available.Dellisanti entered a Staples store at 8 p.m. last July 14, grabbed a framed certificate wall plaque and a waste basket and put 29 Hewlett-Packard printer cartridges in the basket. He then walked out the rear of the store through an employees-only area.Outside, Athanasatos waited in a getaway car. Both were soon stopped and arrested. The property was valued at more than $1,000.During the trial, the jury heard from Massachusetts authorities who arrested the pair for a similar heist at a Staples store in Natick the day before. They were convicted of the crimes in that state, but sentencing information was not available Tuesday.
Athanasatos got more time because of an earlier conviction.He served 30 months in prison in the early 1990s after being convicted of federal charges of conspiracy to transport stolen items across state lines. He was found in possession of missing art items, some from the Albany Institute of History & Art. A March 1989 indictment charged him in connection with that case, in which 25 art objects were stolen from six museums.
The artworks and antiques, ranging from a $2 million 14th-century Chinese vase to 16 antique pocket watches, had a total value of $3.5 million, the FBI said at the time. They were taken between Jan. 12 and Feb. 25, 1989, from museums in Syracuse, Boston, Baltimore, Detroit and Columbus, Ohio, and Albany.
