7,000 Businesses Back Planet Ark’s Push for e-Waste
    Recycling in Australia

    Australia: JUNE 2005–The Australian business
community has responded enthusiastically to Planet Ark’s call for corporations
to increase their recycling of electronic waste. Over 7,000 Australian
businesses have signed up to have a Planet Ark printer cartridge recycling bin
    in their offices.

Roy Morgan research conducted for Planet Ark found that 84% of Australians
would like to introduce environmentally friendly practices at work.

In light of this, Planet Ark offered businesses an easy-to-use printer
cartridge recycling service, free of charge. The organization has been “taken
    aback” by the massive response.

Leading companies like Telstra, CSIRO, Virgin Blue, Toyota,
PricewaterhouseCoopers, Coca-Cola Amatil, Australian Broadcasting Corporation,
and NAB have all signed up to have free ‘Cartridges 4 Planet Ark’ recycling bins
    in their offices.

Australia’s leading cartridge manufacturers are supporting this Planet Ark
program; Brother, Canon, Hewlett-Packard, Lexmark, Konica Minolta, Epson, and
Panasonic cover the cost of collecting and recycling the cartridges.

“None of the e-waste that we collect from these 7,000 businesses will end up
in landfill,” says Jon Dee, the founder of Planet Ark. “Printer cartridge
components are potentially hazardous in landfill, so it’s great to see so many
businesses recycling their cartridges instead of dumping them.”

Adds Dee, “The majority of toner cartridges that we collect are returned to
their original manufacturers for their own remanufacturing or component recovery
programs. And thanks to new Australian ‘Close the Loop’ technology, the rest of
the printer cartridges are 100% recycled in Melbourne with zero waste going to
    landfill.”

Used printer cartridges can now be recycled via ‘Cartridges 4 Planet Ark’
bins at participating Australia Post, Officeworks, Harvey Norman, Tandy, Dick
    Smith Electronics, and Powerhouse outlets.
