Alleged Corruption in Monona County, IA
Thousands of dollars in question as alleged corruption hits Monona County, Iowa.
    According
to the state auditors office, the inappropriate behavior involves, the
Monona County Engineer, and hundreds of printer cartridges. State
investigators tracked, Monona County Engineer, Jon Singlestad’s
spending activity from January 2004 to April of 2007.   The findings of
a special investigation by Iowa’s State Auditor were released on
Wednesday.   That report says Singlestad received two money orders from
someone involved with California-based company: Master Image Supply.
Investigators say $1,250 were deposited directly into the engineer’s
personal bank account.”We’ve conducted investigations, and examined
records and some subpoenas have been issued and stuff and records
reviewed,” says Terry Klooster with the Iowa Department of Criminal
Investigations.Investigators have also identified 10 improper invoices
totaling $17,568.20.  All 10 invoices were for printer cartridges from
two California vendors. According to the audit report, only 5 invoices,
totaling $ 4,330, were paid for by Monona County leaving the rest,
totaling $ 13,238, unaccounted for.”It’s at the felony level as far as
    charges go,” says Klooster.

The report says singlestad claims to
have received 620 printer cartridges in a matter of two years. He also
claims his office used more than 500 of them. The state auditor says
based on the capacity of the printers in that office and the life
expectancy of the cartridges,  it seems unreasonble that many
cartridges could have been used during that time period.  “A report’s
been prepared and stuff and we’ve forwarded it to the Iowa Attorney
General’s office and they’re in the process of reviewing the report and
determining if charges are going to be filed,” says Klooster. As of
Wednesday night, charges had not been filed but according to the Monona
County Attorney, Singlestad has been fired.  We did get a hold of
Singlestad Wednesday afternoon and when asked for a response about the
accusations, he said he had no comment.  Again, while no charges have
been filed, the head investigator says the engineer could face felony
    charges
