Asia inkjet printers sales up 50% in June quarter

    SINGAPORE
    — Asian sales, excluding Japan, of multi-function inkjet printers
increased 50 percent to 1.3 million units worth 180 million US dollars
in the June quarter, with demand boosted by declining prices, an
    industry report said Thursday.
For 2005, an estimated five million will be sold, up more than 40
percent from last year, when the market was worth 586 million dollars,
    International Data Corporation (IDC) said.
In 2006, IDC said sales would increase to six million as inkjet makers
like US giant Hewlett-Packard cut prices to face up to increased
    competition.
“This has been a progressive trend adopted by major vendors in [the]
second quarter,” Natasha Tan, IDC’s regional analyst for peripherals,
    said of falling prices.
According to the IDC report, the average price of a MFP inkjet printer
in the June quarter was 144 dollars, down seven percent from the first
quarter and down 17 percent from a year ago.
