Council to sell printer cartridge stockpile
    Wednesday, 20 October 2004

Wingecarribee Shire Council Continued to accept bulk deliveries of printer cartridges for two years after changing to printer/copier/fax machines which used another brand of cartridges, council was told last week.

The information was included in a report on how council came to accumulate a $100,000 stockpile of printer cartridges at its Moss Vale stores depot.

Council was advised that a bulk order for cartridges for 30 printers of various makes was placed in 2002 to take advantage of a heavily discounted price, with deliveries starting in March 2002 and continuing until mid 2004.

However, as council entered into a contract with Canon for centralised printer/copier/fax machines in July 2002, use of the older printers declined, resulting in a surplus of cartridges.

General manager David McGowan told council that a mistake had been made not only by the individual involved but also by the system which failed to pick it up.

"Systems have been put in place to make sure it doesn't happen again," he said.

Deputy Mayor Nick Campbell-Jones, who requested additional information after the surplus came to light in a review of council stores, said he was fascinated that council stores continued to accept the cartridges for two years.

"This year, we were accepting deliveries of printer cartridges that we had no use for," he said.
