Beijing restricts big box development

2006 – Beijing (CHN): Chinese authorities in Beijing will limit the
construction of new supermarkets and other large commercial facilities
in urban areas starting this year, according to local news agencies.
Building
a hypermarket with an area of more than 6,000 sq m will be strictly
limited within the Second Ring Road, said the Beijing Municipal Bureau
of Commerce.
Construction of large commercial facilities with an
area of more than 10,000 sq m will be restricted within the Third Ring
Road, while the construction of such facilities with an area larger
than 50,000 sq m will be restricted within the Fifth Ring Road, it said.
