Japan's Canon Releasing 9 Ink-jet Printers to Capture No1 Spot

Japan's leading Maker of office equipment and digital cameras Canon Inc said it will release nine new ink-jet printer models from early October, as it seeks to recapture the No 1 spot in the Japanese printer market in 2004 for the first time in eight years.

Seiko Epson Corp has been the top printer maker in Japan for the past seven years.

But Canon has held onto the top spot in the Japanese printer market so far this year, with 47 pct, beating Seiko Epson's 43 pct share.

"With the release of new Pixus models, we aim to have 50 pct market share in the fourth quarter (to December) and 48-49 pct for the full calendar year," Canon unit Canon Sales Co managing director Koji Ashizawa said at a news conference.

Canon had some 43 pct share of the domestic printer market last year, and ranked second to Seiko Epson.

Canon's new Pixus printers, which will hit the market from early October, feature high resolution and are user-friendly, according to Canon.

Canon said it targets a combined production of 350,000 units of the nine Pixus models each month.

Canon separately said it will launch sales of three new multi-function printers, which can also serve as copiers, scanners and fax machines, from late October, targeting a combined production of 150,000 units a month.
