    Canon to build schools in remote areas
    Japan’s Canon will provide more than US $400,000 for the construction of 16 schools in remote areas of the country from now until 2010.A Memorandum of Understanding underscoring the aid was signed in Hanoi on July 18 by President and CEO of the Canon group Tsuneji Uchida and Deputy Minister of Education and Training Pham Vu Luan.Canon will kick off the project by building 15 classrooms in the northern mountainous provinces of Tuyen Quang and Hoa Binh and central Thanh Hoa province. Work on the classrooms are expected to be completed by the end of October this year.After entering the country five years ago, Canon Vietnam now boasts one factory in Hanoi’s Thang Long industrial zone (IZ) and two more in the Que Vo and Tien Son IZs in northern Bac Ninh province.

    Its main products include laser printers, ink-jet printers, photocopiers and cameras.Canon Vietnam employs more than 13,000 local workers and became Vietnam’s leading exporter with revenues of US $700 million in 2006. Pundits believe that figure will climb to US $1 billion by year end.
