Canon to Build 20 Bln Yen Copier Factory in Japan, Nikkei Says
March 31 — Canon Inc. will spend about 20 billion yen ($189.4 million) to build a high-end copier factory in Toride, Japan, Nikkei English News reported, without saying where it got the information.
Cannon wants to consolidate development and production at the new factory to help it roll out new products more quickly, Nikkei said.
Construction of the 76,000-square-meter (818,000-square- foot) plant will begin in July and be finished by July 2005, Nikkei said.
About 5,500 people will be employed at the plant, with 1,000 coming from a factory in Ami, Nikkei reported. The Ami factory will halt copier production and begin specializing in equipment used to make liquid crystal display panels.
