Chinese press quiet about export safety scare
August 2007Beijing – Rising global concerns about the safety of Chinese-made exports, reflected now in a US recall of nearly a million toys, went virtually unreported in China’s government-controlled press on Friday.Apart from a vague reassurance that Chinese vegetables were safe, carried in an English-language paper read mostly by foreigners, the vast majority of the nation’s print and electronic media kept silent on the issue. This is despite the fact that China’s toy industry, which earned $17,8-billion for the nation last year and employs hundreds of thousands of people, could potentially see a severe impact from the recall.US-based Fisher-Price said Wednesday it was recalling 967 000 toys including popular Sesame Street and Dora the Explorer-branded toys over fears their paint could contain excessive levels of lead.
