Counterfeiter used magnetic ink
A man who was arrested Friday on suspicion of forging and exchanging four of about 1,800 10,000 yen bills for 1,000 yen bills printed the fake money with a printer using magnetic toner, Metropolitan Police Department officers said Friday.Satoshi Ito, 50, a Tokyo advertising company employee, allegedly exchanged the fake money at pachinko parlor money changers.
Genuine 10,000 yen notes are printed with magnetic ink.
According to the officers, money changing machines at pachinko parlors often distinguish genuine notes from counterfeits by examining patterns and magnetic signatures. But the money changers failed to detect the difference because the bogus notes also were magnetic.
Officers are questioning Ito about his use of the magnetic toner.
Ito went to his office on weekends or late at night when there were no other people around and made the old-style 10,000 yen notes using a company computer, scanner and printer, the officers said.
The fake bills have a lighter color than real ones and although they do not appear to be as detailed in design as genuine notes, they did carry a slight magnetic signature, the officers said.
Batches of the fake bills have different serial numbers, indicating Ito made the fake money capable of beating money changers through trial and error, the officers said.
