    Counterfeiting, the Environment and Other Issues From the Pacific Rim Forum

    A number of Aussies sat on the panel for the Pacific Rim Forum at the 2004 World Expo,As well as several individuals from Taiwan,Hong Kong and mainland China. Some of the topics brought up from the floor are subjects that deserve a wider audience. This brief recap of the forum offers a look at the issues of concern in the Pacific Rim as well as the rest of the world — issues that, with the new year upon us, bear revisiting.

    The first issue raised was counterfeiting.Millions of dollars of counterfeit products were uncovered on the West Coast of the United States in the Last year. This not only impacts the remanufacturing market but also undermines the OEMs.

    Three Chinese members of the panel gave enlightening responses to some of the questions and comments regarding counterfeiting. For example, HP has not applied for patent protection for some of its products in China and many South American countries. The result is that there is nothing to stop anyone from producing clones of these products, provided they are marketed in the countries Where no patent protection applies. In fact, one panel member mentioned that his company is producing what he called a better-than-HP inkjet cartridge for this very reason. However, as Chinese companies gain more experience in trading with the West, they are also Becoming more aware of the protocols that apply and helping to make trading a two-way street.
