Epson looks at options after Association u-turN

Epson is Considering its options after the Dutch Consumers’ Association had to withdraw its accusation that the printer maker had taken part in ‘devious tricks’ in relation to the replacement of inkjet cartridges for its printers.

The Dutch organisation claimed Epson’s inkjet printers informed consumers of the need to replace inkjet cartridges before it was necessary as the chip in the firm’s inkjet cartridges warns when a replacement is needed when there is still ink left in it. The consumer group claimed they were able to print off many more pages after the replacement warning was given.

However, Epson said the residual ink is left in the cartridge to ensure a constant quality of print-outs and protect the print-head. Following a meeting with Epson, the consumer group withdraw its accusations and is no longer telling its 650,000 members to stop buying Epson inkjet printers.

In a news release, the consumer group said it now accepted that the residual ink left in the ‘empty’ cartridges did not amount to a malicious practice and its negative purchasing advice was therefore unfounded. It added that it “regrets the fact that due to its earlier negative purchasing advice an incorrect image of Epson has developed in the market and that Epson has suffered damages because of that”.
