Central Elementary School was selected as a 2006 Hewlett Packard
Technology for teaching grant recipient. HP is awarding $4.5 million in
cash and equipment to teams of five teachers at 130 kindergarten
through 12th grade public schools in the United States. Preference was
given to schools serving low-income students, and projects including a
math or science component.The HP Technology for Teaching grant program
is designed to transform and improve learning in the classroom through
innovative uses of technology. During the 2006-07 school year, these
projects will impact nearly 40,000 students.Central Elementary will
receive an HP award package valued at more than $35,000, which will
include five HP Tablet PCs, five HP multimedia projectors, five HP
digital cameras, five HP all-in-one printer/scanner/copiers, software
and accessories, a cash stipend for each teacher and a professional
development program than includes customized learning opportunities,
expert mentoring and participation in an online learning community to
support teachers’ use of technology.Blast Off Into Space will be an
8-week unit integrating topics in space science with math, social
studies and language arts. Through the use of technology students will
discover how math and science are interrelated and how technology is
used everyday. Teachers and students will use pocket PCs to record data
about space objects and astrological terms. Tablet PCs and multimedia
projectors will be used for virtual field trips through space, a place
most students will never see. Students will use the digital camera and
scanner to create nonfiction books and projects. Through the use of
technology for classroom instruction, students will broaden their
educational experience and knowledge of the science of space.“It is an
honor to be awarded the prestigious Hewlett Packard Technology for
Teaching Grant,” says Johns. “This grant from Hewlett Packard will
provide a wonderful opportunity for our students to use technology
across the curriculum. We are looking forward to teaching the “Blast
Off Into Space” unit and using the technology provided by Hewlett
Packard in our classrooms”The HP Technology for Teaching grant program
is also awarding grants totaling $2.8 million to 40 two and four-year
colleges and universities in the United States and Puerto Rico.From
2004 to 2006, HP has committed $36 million in Technology for Teaching
grants to more than 650 schools worldwide to support Hip’s broader
education goal of transforming teaching and learning through the
integration of technology.“The HP Technology for Teaching initiative
focuses on transforming teaching and learning through technology”, said
Bess Stephens, Vice President, Philanthropy and Education, HP. “By
integrating mobile technology in meaningful ways into their classrooms,
instructors can increase student achievement and interest and prepare
