Epson
has announced its global compliance with the RoHS Directive
(Restriction of the use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical
and Electronic Equipment) that came into effect from July 1, 2006,
contributing to the removal of six hazardous substances from electrical
and electronic equipment. The directive bans the placing on the EU
market of new electrical and electronic equipment containing more than
agreed levels of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium,
polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE)
flame retardants.’Chemical management has always been a priority for
Epson and we have been working towards achieving the goals outlined in
the RoHS Directive as part of our environmental programme. It is our
aim to develop premium quality products with minimum impact on the
environment.”Our engineering departments and factories have been
researching and developing lead-free products since 1999, four years
before the approval of the RoHS Directive which was passed in 2003. We
welcome the regulations and are pleased to announce our global
compliance with the Directive,’ El-Dalu added.Epson has already put in
place a sophisticated chemical management system that ensures that all
its products comply with the RoHS Directive and that customers can
continue to purchase the same high-quality Epson products as they did
before the Directive came into force. Epson evaluated a total of 24,000
parts against the criteria of the RoHS Directive and as a result, 1,156
products were changed to ensure RoHS compliance well ahead of the July
1 deadline.Epson established a chemical control substitute committee as
far back as 2003, to lead the company’s efforts to become RoHS
compliant. Around 300 people have been involved in areas such as green
procurement, elimination of substances, compliance audits and the
general chemical management system.Epson has also changed the control
of its global supply chain to ensure that all of its 2,200 suppliers
meet the terms of the RoHS Directive by setting up an auditing system
in which 150 people check compliance statements and perform tests on
the supplied parts. Epson also changed both product design and
production processes to ensure that its products use lead-free solder
and become RoHS compliant through the development of lead-free
products.’Epson engineers around the globe physically test around 2,000
parts a day to ensure that all supplied components are compliant with
the directive. Over 500,000 such tests have been performed till date to
offer eco-friendly products to today’s increasingly
environment-conscious consumers,’ El-Dalu concluded. -
