    WEE regulations come into force
December 2006 — High Wycombe (UK): By March 2007, all producers (any business that manufactures, imports or rebrands electrical or electronic equipment) will need to join an approved producer compliance scheme to ensure that they are able to comply with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive from 1 July 2007.

Those that sell electrical and electronic equipment to consumers have a choice of how they meet their obligations under the directive by either joining the Distributor Take Back Scheme (DTS), which Valpak Retail WEEE Services has been appointed to operate, or offer in-store take back. However those that sell electrical and electronic equipment to business end users have no statutory obligation under the regulations.

More information about how the WEEE Directive will affect the office products industry is available in the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment and the Office Products Industry document, which can be downloaded from the BOSS members’ area at http://www.bossfederation.co.uk

At the end of January the BOSS Environment Committee is holding a meeting where several Producer Compliance Schemes are going to be invited to attend and give presentations about their offerings. They will also be asked a number of questions from an industry perspective and the findings from this will form another briefing document that will also be posted on the website. Members will be informed once the document has been produced.
