Fake Canon Goods Worth Rs 10 Lakh Seized in Mumbai
    Mumbai, Nov 2005
In a late-night raid recently on a manufacturing unit at MRA Marg, Mumbai police seized more than 300 pieces of duplicate Canon cartridges and toners worth about Rs 10 lakh. The seized cartridges were manufactured using fake packing materials, holograms and price stickers.
The police arrested the owner of the unit and registered a case under sections 51 and 63 of the Copyright Act.
The raid was led by EIPR (Enforcers of Intellectual Property Rights), an ISO-certified company founded by a former top police official and Zaheer Khan. R. B. Chavan (GM-operations, West Region) and B. G. Gaikwad represented EIPR on behalf of Canon Inc.
Confirming the raid, Mahesh Bhimrao Bansode, investigating officer, EIPR, said, “Our investigations revealed the prevalence of such activity that is detrimental to the business interest of our client, Canon Inc. We registered an FIR with MRA Marg police station and a team led by sub-inspector Kamble conducted the raid on the unit. The team confiscated a huge quantity of Canon cartridges and toners worth more than Rs 5 lakh.”
Citing this as a clear case of violation of section 51/63 of the Copyright Act 1957, Bansode said, “The unit in question has been using packing material which has a different printing and color combination, fake hologram and price stickers to mislead people. As we had information on the activities of this firm, we had kept a watch on its movements for some time before approaching the police and lodging an FIR.”
According to EIPR, every year business worth crores is conducted on just spurious goods. To curb this trend, it has asked people to be vigilant and alert and inform the concerned authorities.
