    Four charged in supply scam
    The
CANADIAN Competition Bureau has laid charges against four Quebec
telemarketers accused of running a scam, where quite a few Calgary
    companies were ripped off.

Of the 619 complaints, the Competition Bureau received about this scam, 108 were filed by Alberta businesses.
Investigators say, between January 2000 and February 2004, the con artists generated nearly $8 million operating this scam.
It allegedly worked like all the light bulb and toner scams CTV News’ Consumer Watch has warned about in the past.
The con artist calls the business pretending to be the company’s regular supplier of certain office products.
He claims that a big price increase for the supplies is imminent and encourages the company to place a large order.
He fails to disclose the price for the supplies and other important details like the return policy.
    As
a result, the business ends up paying for expensive supplies it never
would have ordered, but for the telemarketer’s misrepresentations.
    In
this case, the supplies the four men were selling were paper, ink
cartridges, and cleaning cards used with electronic payment and credit
    card devices.
Two companies were also charged along with the men, Merchant Supply International and International Merchant Supply.
