HP Expands Its Planet Partners Printing Supplies Return and Recycling Program Since 1991, customers have helped HP recycle more than 176 million pounds of HP LaserJet and inkjet print cartridges   HP today Announced the expansion of its successful Planet Partners program inkjet print cartridge return and recycling service in the United States to better serve customers and help protect the environment. Beginning in June, customers can recycle their empty HP 58 and HP 59 inkjet print cartridges by placing them in an included postage-paid return envelope and dropping it in the mail. Through this free and easy-to-use service, customers are encouraged to take an active role in reducing the amount of waste that impacts the environment. The new HP 58 and HP 59 inkjet print cartridge recycling service expands on existing return options, including in-box postage-paid return labels for most HP LaserJet cartridges as well as HP 56 and HP 57 inkjet print cartridges. Customers can continue to order postage-paid shipping materials online for bulk and individual returns of HP print cartridges. In 2003, more than 10 million HP LaserJet print cartridges and 1.8 million HP inkjet print cartridges were returned and recycled worldwide through the Planet Partners program, currently available in more than 30 countries in Asia, Europe, South America and North America. HP LaserJet and inkjet print cartridges returned through the Planet Partners program go to state-of-the-art recycling operations where they are reduced into raw materials for use in new metal and plastic products. A commitment to environmental sustainability One of the first companies to offer recycling programs for toner print cartridges, HP introduced the Planet Partners return and recycling program for LaserJet print cartridges in 1991. HP inkjet print cartridge return and recycling was introduced in 1997. Since 1991, HP has helped customers recycle more than 176 million pounds of LaserJet and inkjet print cartridge materials worldwide, keeping thousands of tons of materials out of the world's landfills. All HP print cartridges returned to HP go through the Planet Partners recycling process. In 2003, no material from HP LaserJet print cartridges returned and recycled through Planet Partners was sent to landfill. HP recycled and recovered for energy 100 percent of materials in returned HP LaserJet print cartridges and up to 90 percent of the materials from inkjet print cartridges worldwide. Paired with Planet Partners, HP's Design for Environment program extends HP's long-standing environmental commitment throughout the entire lifecycle including design, manufacturing, packaging, customer use and recycling. Established in 1992, the Design for Environment program helps optimize the environmental characteristics of HP products, while maximizing overall value to customers. In addition, HP is the only PC manufacturer to operate its own end-to-end hardware recycling facilities. In 1997, HP opened its first recycling facility in Roseville, Calif. A second facility has since been opened near Nashville, Tenn. Each month, HP recycles more than 6 million pounds of computer equipment globally. As an added incentive for customers, HP recently doubled the value of its current hardware recycling e-coupon during the month of April to encourage responsible recycling of unwanted computer hardware. The program rewards consumers in the United States with a coupon worth up to $100 toward the purchase of a new PC, printer or other peripheral on hpshopping.com when they purchase HP's hardware recycling service online. This March, customers also saw the introduction of two new grades of HP recycled everyday paper: HP Digital Copy Recycled and HP Multipurpose Recycled. Both are made of 30 percent post-consumer content without compromising quality or printing reliability.
