    HP Hopes Low-Cost, Color Printer Line Boosts Sales
    NEW YORK (July 05) – Computer maker Hewlett Packard Co. said Monday that it plans to launch several models of low-cost, high-speed color and photo printers through the fall as it seeks to invigorate a key segment of its operations.

    The company also announced an alliance with Walgreen Co. that allows the drug store chain to offer online photo developing.

    H-P said that it will launch its $199 Photosmart 8250 Photo Printer later this month and will release its Photosmart 3000 All-in-One series of printers in the fall. The Photosmart 3000 All-in-One line, priced from $299 to $399, can produce four-inch by six-inch photos in as fast as 14 seconds for as little as 24 cents a print.

    The printer lines are the result of a five-year, $1.4 billion strategic investment to develop a lower-cost, more accurate inkjet printhead, the company said.

    H-P also launched six new portable photo printers and a new line of digital cameras, and plans to launch its Officejet Pro K550 Color Printer series in the fall.

    The printing and imaging business accounted for about 60 percent of H-P’s operating profit in the second quarter ended April 30, but the segment still declined from a year ago amid increased competition from Dell and Lexmark.

    Additionally, the company will give customers on Walgreen’s Web site access to Snapfish, the online photo Web site acquired by Hewlett Packard in April. Walgreen customers will then be able to upload digital pictures and pick up prints at a Walgreen store in about an hour or have them delivered by mail. The service is expected to be available in all Walgreen markets by September.

    Financial details were of the Walgreen alliance were not disclosed.

    Hewlett Packard shares rose 15 cents to $24.43 in morning trading and Walgreen shares rose 27 cents to $47.16. Both trade on the New York Stock Exchange.
