IBM wins $600 mln contract with ING’s U.S. unit

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec 16 (Reuters) – International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE: color=#0000ff IBM color=#0000ffNews) said on Tuesday it had Won a $600 million, seven-year contract to manage information technology for ING U.S. Financial Services.

Under the contract, IBM, which is the world’s largest provider of computers and computer services, will consolidate ING U.S. Financial Services’ mainframe and midrange computer operations and provide mid-range servers, mainframe computers, notebook and desktop computers.

The new computing solution will use IBM’s Universal Management Infrastructure software, enabling ING U.S. Financial Services to either boost or cut computing capacity as demand for it changes, IBM said.

The Universal Management Infrastructure software is part of IBM’s on-demand computing offerings, which are similar to rival Hewlett-Packard Co.’s (NYSE: color=#0000ff HPQ color=#0000ffNews) Adaptive Enterprise strategy, and the effort that Sun Microsystems Inc. (NasdaqNM: color=#0000ff SUNW color=#0000ffNews) is making with its N1 plan.

Also, IBM, which is based in Armonk, New York, will run ING U.S. Financial Services’ help desk, voice and data networks.

ING U.S. Financial Services is a unit of Dutch financial services group ING Groep N.V. (Amsterdam: color=#0000ff ING.AS color=#0000ffNews; NYSE: color=#0000ff ING color=#0000ffNews).
