HP original inkjet print cartridges have edge over refillables, survey shows
KUALA LUMPUR MALAYSIA: IT giant Hewlett-Packard’s (HP) original inkjet print cartridges produce over twice as many pages compared to Asia-Pacific brands of manufacturers and refilled ink cartridges, a survey showed.More than one in four cartridges from Asia-Pacific brands of remanufactured and refilled cartridges, tested by a technical test organisation TUV SUD PSB, could not be used or failed prematurely, HP said yesterday.

According to the survey on cartridge yield and reliability study for Asia Pacific, HP said the findings showed that its original cartridges had no reliability issues during testing.Refilled ink cartridges were found to be lacking in reliability and yield. In the tests on average original HP print cartridges, they produced almost 2.5 times as many pages more than refilled cartridges which were also found to have an extremely high failure rate. From left: Neel Pillai, Yan and Hewlett-Packard (M) Sdn Bhd imaging & printing group market development manager (supplies) Kym Lim at the launch of HP’s latest Ink Technologies in Kuala Lumpur.
The details of the survey were revealed by its country general manger, imaging and printing group of Hewlett-Packard (M) Sdn Bhd, Yan Yoke Ping.“HP has long being concerned that ink cartridge users across Asia Pacific are not aware of the reliability issues when using remanufactured and refilled cartridges,” she said, explaining that the survey was to reveal the hidden costs involved to help consumers make a more informed choice,” she said.TUV SUD assistant vice president of testing services Tan Lee Heng said the test findings showed that original HP inkjet cartridges, on average produced 106.6% more pages compared to refill brands tested, and 59.8% more pages compared to branded remanufactured cartridges. The page yield and reliability of HP branded inkjet cartridges were evaluated against 14 brands of remanufactured or refillable cartridges, which were selected from six Asia-Pacific countries based on sales and usage.

Page yield findings show that on average, HP original cartridges produce twice as many pages than remanufactured and refillable cartridge brands.Cartridge reliability results prove that one in four remanufactured and refillable brands had experienced substantial ink leakage, colour mixing and failure in print-on installation.HP imaging and printing group regional market manager for Japan and Asia Pacific Neel Pillai said that a refillable cartridge would cost the consumer RM30 compared to an original HP cartridge priced at RM80.However, HP cartridges produce 2.4 times more page yield, which means a refillable that produces the same amount of pages would cost RM75, he said.
