New York Woman Wins National Recycling Prize
America Recycles Day, Inc. today awarded its National Grand Prize, a new Ford Escape Hybrid, to Myrna Gittler of Plainview, New York. Myrna’s pledge to recycle more was drawn from more than 100,000 pledges entered in the national drawing during last year’s America Recycles campaign, which is celebrated on November 15 of each year.Rockville Centre, Ny) June 2006 — America Recycles Day, Inc. today awarded its National Grand Prize, a new Ford Escape Hybrid, to Myrna Gittler of Plainview, New York. Myrna’s pledge to recycle more was drawn from more than 100,000 pledges entered in the national drawing during last year’s America Recycles campaign, which is celebrated on November 15 of each year. America Recycles awards prizes such as fuel-efficient cars, bikes composed of recycled content, and in some years, eco-friendly houses to raise awareness of the importance of recycling and buying products made from recycled materials. In 2005, Americans of all ages from all 50 states filled out pledge cards, which were entered into the drawing. The pledge cards, submitted at more than 900 America Recycles events nationwide and via the America Recycles website, asked participants to affirm their commitment to recycling and buying recycled products. Myrna was joined by her husband, Harold, in accepting the keys to their new hybrid SUV during a ceremony today at Able Ford in Rockville Centre. Mayor Eugene Murray (Village of Rockville Centre, NY); Meg Morris, Chairperson, America Recycles (Washington, DC) and Jimmy O’Connor, Program Coordinator, America Recycles (Washington, DC), along with representatives from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Association of Long Island Recycling Officials presented the car to the couple.America Recycles events are coordinated throughout New York by the Department of Environmental Conservation. “By actively participating in America Recycles campaigns, New York is doing an excellent job of making its residents aware of the value of recycling and buying recycled products,” said Meg Morris.The Gittlers, longtime recyclers of 30 years on Long Island, take their pledge to recycle to heart. Myrna Gittler, director of a nearby nursery school, utilizes recycled materials on a daily basis, from reusing the back side of office paper to arts and crafts projects for the children. Harold Gittler, retired South Bronx social work administrator, used recycled materials for craft projects and to furnish the community facility. “We all should recycle and reuse materials, whenever possible, to avoid wasting natural resources,” remarked Myrna Gittler.America Recycles also awarded five Trek bicycles made with recycled aluminum frames to youth who completed pledge cards, including Brendan Nelson, Connecticut; Lindsey Martin, Michigan; Melvin Patrick Pearsall, Florida; Julianna Foglio, California; and Mary Ellen Bennett, South Carolina.
