Colorful Fall Season Ahead for HP, Dell

With fall Around the corner, Dell and Hewlett-Packard have introduced several new color printers for the new season. At prices normally suited for black-and-white laser printers, Dell released the 5100cn, 3000cn and 3100cn laser printers. HP, meanwhile, announced an entire fall lineup of products geared toward digital technology and photo printing, including several new printer models and inks.

The Dell 5100cn targets the workgroup color laser market with black and color print speeds up to 35 and 25 pages per minute, respectively, at a price of $999. The Dell 3000cn and 3100cn offer black printing with the option to print in color. The 3000cn is a color laser for small or home offices and costs $449. The 3100cn is designed for the office color market and costs $549. Because of its larger toner capacity, the 3100cn delivers a lower toner cost per page, according to the company. Both the 3000cn and 3100cn print black text at speeds of up to 25 ppm and color up to 5 ppm. Dell makes a point to say the actual print speeds for all three new models will vary with use.

The new Dell units also include Dell’s ColorTrack software, which enables customers to toggle between monochrome and color printing, allowing them to use color for only their most important print jobs. ColorTrack helps reduce and manage supplies costs by ensuring that color toner is not used when printing documents in black.

HP's new photo printers support a new line of branded inks and specialty papers. HP Vivera inks work as a system with new HP printers and specialty papers to produce up to 40 percent faster prints that resist fading for generations, offer improved print quality and cost as low as 29 cents for a 4-by-6-inch photos, according to the company.

Some of the new photo printers from HP include the Photosmart 375 compact that becomes a mobile digital photo lab for 4-by-6-inch prints; the Photosmart 2710 all-in-one that can print, copy, scan and fax; the Photosmart 8450 that produces color and black-and-white prints with its eight-ink color printing system. HP also introduced Premium Plus Papers in 5-by-7-inch borderless and 4-by-12-inch panorama sizes
