Industry-Standard Toner Yield Certification Service
MOORPARK,Calif.,April 05–QualityLogic today announced the first
independent, standard, certified yield test service for both monochrome and
color laser printer toner cartridges. Until recently, there has been no industry
standard for ensuring comparable yield measurements between printers from
different manufacturers. Since a typical monochrome office printer that costs
$700 may use almost $10,000 in toner over a six year life, yield is a critical
factor in the purchasing decision.According to James Mater, QualityLogic
president and CEO, “Manufacturers of printer products publish consumables
‘yield’ specifications that are used by buyers to compare cost-per-page and
total cost-of-ownership. While other factors go into a purchase decision,
billions of dollars of printer and consumables sales are strongly influenced by
these specifications.”
“For years, printer manufacturers measured yield using their own test
files and methodologies. Even though most used five percent coverage pages,
differing methodologies made it impossible to compare the yields of one
manufacturer’s printer against another’s. Our service will help the industry
standardize these specifications between manufacturers of printer and MFP
products,” Mater continued.
An international effort by the ISO standards group has resulted in the
definition of a methodology for measuring monochrome toner yield (ISO/IEC
19752). QualityLogic’s research and that of others shows that widely differing
yield specifications can be reported using proprietary methods versus the
standard ISO methodology.
The printer industry’s need for a consistent yield assessment methodology
for monochrome toner printers is met by ISO/IEC 19752. Major printer
manufacturers, including HP, Canon, Epson, Lexmark and Kyocera Mita, have
endorsed and started to use the ISO monochrome toner yield standard. Others are
expected to get on board.
Additional work is underway by ISO to define a methodology for color
toner yield measurements, following the basic methods defined for monochrome
yield. In the interim, QualityLogic has developed a color toner yield test
methodology that is consistent with the spirit of ongoing standards work and
uses proposed ISO test pages. Once the new ISO standard is approved,
QualityLogic will implement changes in its methodology to conform to it.
The QualityLogic services provide printer manufacturers with an
independently-certified yield specification based on the ISO standard for
monochrome toner, or the QualityLogic interim standard for color toner. The
services will assist the industry in establishing standardized yield reporting,
which will benefit its customers -
