Rapid Refill Ink celebrates Earth Day, year round
“I became interested in this industry because it was time for me to do a little something for the world,” said Rick Morris, owner of Rapid Refill Ink located at 155 SW Century Drive in Bend. “I don’t know how much I can impact the world by recycling cartridges, but at least I’m trying.”
Rapid Refill Ink’s commitment to the environment goes even further. The lush carpeting in the stores is 52 percent post-consumer content and made in part from recycled milk containers.
The walls are made of 100 percent wheat stock and the countertops from compressed sunflower seeds. The flooring in the store’s production areas comes from reclaimed tile and its brochures are printed on recycled paper.
But Rapid Refill Ink’s biggest impact is what could ultimately be the billions of inkjet and laser toner cartridges it keeps from the world’s landfills. In the United States alone nearly eight cartridges are thrown away every second, according to Recharger Magazine. What’s more, each plastic toner requires 3 1/2 quarts of oil to produce; 2 1/2 ounces of oil are used to produce each new inkjet cartridge. “Some cartridges can be remanufactured 20 to 30 times,” Morris said. “If you look at how many cartridges are sold each day and how many could be remanufactured, you’d see how prudent it would be in the long run.”
After opening its first store in Eugene, Ore., in November 2002, Rapid Refill Ink began franchising in January 2004 and within two months had gained commitments for 240 locations to be opened within 36 months. Currently there are 50 locations open with 90 more under development. By the end of 2009, Rapid Refill Ink expects to have over 1,000 locations open throughout the United States.
Rapid Refill Ink is a company committed to saving the environment in any way possible. With each Rapid Refill Ink, there are less ink cartridges that filter the earth with waste,Did you know that approximately 1.8 billion inkjet and laser toner cartridges are thrown into landfills every year? With an average value of an empty inkjet cartridge being $4, this equates to billions of dollars being tossed in landfills each year, with a projected weight equal to 67,612 Ford Explorers!
As Earth Day approaches on April 22nd, it is an important time to remind ourselves that we must be environmentally conscious on a year-round basis. This can be as easy as practicing the Environmental Protection Agency’s three R’s: reduce, reuse and recycle. According to the EPA, first reduce how much you use, then reuse what you can, and then recycle the rest.
Rapid Refill Ink specializes in remanufacturing and selling inkjet and laser toner cartridges for printers, copiers, fax machines and all-in-one machines at prices 30 to 70 percent below those of OEMs..
