Romanian Exceeds Expectations in 4Q 2007
The Romanian hardcopy peripherals (HCP)
market reached record levels in the fourth quarter of 2007, increasing
more than 40 percent year on year in unit terms and over 55 percent in
value to almost 230,000 units, worth about $66 million. The top 3
vendors — HP, Canon, and Epson — were responsible for more than 82
percent of total shipments.According to IDC, Romanian HCP market
expansion probably peaked in 2007, with slightly slower but steady
growth expected in the coming years.”The printer, copier, and MFP
market in Romania exceeded all expectations in the last three months of
2007,” said Dana Samson, research analyst, IDC Romania. “While the
fourth quarter is traditionally very positive due to end-of-year
marketing campaigns, this time the market also received a significant
boost from bids for a series of very large public tenders.”Sales of
multifunctional devices continued their fast expansion in annual terms
in the fourth quarter of 2007, with shipments up 68.2%. In contrast,
single-function printer shipments grew a marginal 5.5% year on year.
Shipments of single-function copiers rose 50%, but accounted for only
0.5% of the total Romanian market in the fourth
quarter.”Multifunctional devices were definitely the hottest products
on the market,” said Samson. “In the fourth quarter, MFPs continued to
increase their market share at the expense of single-function devices
and now account for two-thirds of the market, twice as much as
single-function equipment.”As for printing technologies, inkjet
continued to dominate the market in the fourth quarter of 2007, with
71.2% of shipments. Monochromatic laser devices accounted for a quarter
of the market, while color laser technology took only 2.5%.
