Bodle brokers toner compromise
SOUTH
BEND — St. Joseph County Commissioner Cindy Bodle, D-District 3, ended
the county’s toner cartridge scrap Tuesday by offering a compromise.
The
commissioners had deadlocked a week ago, when they were unable to agree
on a recommendation by Lou Ann Hill, county purchasing manager, that
they accept bids on both original equipment and the less-expensive
remanufactured toner cartridges. Both types of cartridges are used in
office machines.
After being tabled last week, the issue came before the commissioners again Tuesday.
Commissioner
Steve Ross, D-District 2, was more adamant than ever about requiring
the exclusive use of remanufactured cartridges.
Ross said last week that two states require their use and said Tuesday that the federal government does the same.
Commissioner
Mark Dobson, R-District 1, who had pushed for keeping the option to use
new equipment open, had not changed his opinion.
That’s when Bodle stepped in with her compromise.
She
recommended that bids for both original equipment and remanufactured
cartridges be accepted, with the understanding that the commissioners
would expect county departments to primarily use recycled units.
Any
department wanting to use original equipment cartridges could do so,
she suggested, but only with the approval of commissioners.
Dobson seconded that motion, which carried despite Ross’ vote against it.
