    Printer supplies drive US growth

Electronic Office supplies (EOS) sales shot up 6.2 per cent in the US last year bucking trends in the relatively stagnant office products market.

According to a report by research firm MPA International in conjunction with SHOPA and OPI, EOS supplies were one of the major plus points for the US OP industry.

Managing director Martin Wilde said: “Growth in the US EOS sector has been driven largely by increasing demand for printer cartridges. That is particularly so for inkjet cartridges and colour laser printer cartridges, since demand for mono laser cartridges has now peaked.

“Future demand for mono laser cartridges is expected to remain steady for the forecast period, while demand for inkjet and colour laser cartridges will continue to grow, driving overall demand for EOS forward at round 7 to 7.5 per cent per annum for the next few years.”

Other findings in the survey revealed that overall, the market rose by 1.8 per cent from 2002 to 2003 to reach $29.3 billion at manufacturers’ selling price. And, despite the continuing strength of the power channel (office superstores and retailers) dominating market share at 51 per cent, independent dealers also held up well at 13 per cent.
