    U.S. Printer 2005-2009 Forecast

AN IDC study quantifies the U.S. single-function printer market
opportunity and analyzes it by vendor and by segment. The total U.S. printer
market is expected to drop slightly throughout the forecast period due to
shifting volumes to MFPs. However, the good news is that IDC has slowed down its
forecast for the single-function to multifunction transition as printer vendors
continue to find opportunities with single-function printer products. For
example, IDC anticipated unit and value CAGRs of -7% and -4%, respectively, in
last year’s U.S. printer forecast study. In comparison, this year’s study shows
unit and value CAGRs of -1.8% and -1.4% for 2004–2009.

    “While the U.S.
printer market is expected to show some decline over the forecast
period, market opportunities remain in certain segments, “Color page
printers will more than double their unit volume during the forecast
period, while inkjet printers will still account for more than 10.63
million unit shipments in 2009. Additionally, the significant ASV
declines in certain monochrome laser and color page printer segments
will drive interest from increasingly cost-conscious customers.”
