UK. The Green Blue encourages businesses to recycle and help the environment
March
2006The BMF and RYA’s environment scheme, The Green Blue, has teamed up
with Environmental Business Products Ltd (EBP) and its brand, Ink
Again, to encourage marine businesses to recycle printer cartridges and
at the same time raise money for future Green Blue projects. For every
inkjet or laser toner cartridge recycled EBP will donate £1 towards The
Green Blue. Raising money for The Green Blue is vital for its continued
success as it enables valuable government funding to be released into
the project.
The Green Blue plans to distribute 100,000 recycling
bags and boxes during the year to member companies to encourage
participation in the scheme. Companies or individuals wishing to take
part in the scheme can contact Ink Again at email
thegreenblue@inkagain.co.uk making sure they quote ‘The Green Blue
Recycling Appeal’. The scheme won’t cost businesses – the envelopes are
freepost and larger toners can be collected from offices.
Inkjet
cartridges are commonly used in printers at homes and in offices and
are non-biodegradable. But what many people do not know is that they
have a financial value as they can be remanufactured and then resold.
Anna
Wyse, Project Manager for The Green Blue said: “This is such a simple
way of helping reduce our impact on the environment and it won’t cost
businesses anything. And at the same time, businesses will be able to
support future Green Blue initiatives.”
Some facts about printer cartridges:
Inkjet
cartridges will take about 1,000 years to decompose in landfill sites.
It can take up to 6 pints (nearly 3.5 litres) of oil to make just one
printer cartridge. Of some 60 million inkjet cartridges used each year
in the UK, only about 10% are recycled. This means that 57 million
cartridges get thrown away each year and end up in landfill sites or
are incinerated. Landfill sites contain ‘buried treasure’ worth over
£100 million in raw materials from discarded printer cartridges.
