War on paper no longer black and white issue
    This
week’s Computerworld feature, Paper Cuts, shows how some companies are
redoubling their efforts to push out paper as a transaction medium,
particularly around the edges of the business. The story cites data
from iSuppli that shows how paper consumption is trending downward.
However, that doesn’t necessarily translate into fewer shipments of
printers.Users are buying more networked, multifunction printers as
they contine to consolidate printing resources, according to IDC
analyst Keith Kmetz. And the use of color page printers is also on the
rise. “The costs are coming dramatically down,” both for color laser
machines and consumables, says Kmetz.Printer sales are showing signs of
strong growth in both multifunction devices and color laser printing.
According to IDC’s U.S. Printer 2006-2010 Forecast, released this
month, Color page printer shipments grew 53% last year, topping 900,000
units. That’s about one third of the volume of monochrome laser
printers, but total shipments are expected to more than double by 2010.
Monochrome laser shipments will drop by about 3% over the same period,
according to IDC’s numbers. So while the growth in total page volmes is
relatively anemic, the type of printing businesses do appears to be
    changing.
