Xerox Canadian researchers awarded top prize in emerging technology
Breakthrough toner technology developed in Canada recognized by CATAAlliance
OTTAWA, June 05 – Researchers from the Xerox Research Centre of Canada (XRCC) have won the 2005 Innovation and Leadership Award for Best
Emerging Technology given by the CATAAlliance. Announced at a ceremony last night, the award is given to a Canadian team or individual to recognize an innovative new product, advanced technology or technology-based service, and is based on the degree of innovation incorporated in the technology, as well as its market potential. The honours went to the team of Xerox researchers responsible for the development of a breakthrough toner technology, called Emulsion Aggregation (EA), that accelerates the transition to colour printing because it enables higher color print quality and less toner usage.
“The selection of EA technology by the members of the CATAAlliance is further confirmation of Xerox’s world-class material researchers in Canada and
strength in innovation, and Xerox’s capabilities to commercialize innovative technology,” said Hadi Mahabadi, vice-president and centre manager, Xerox Research Centre of Canada. “EA Technology paves the way for widespread use of digital colour printing, a key strategic initiative and growth platform for Xerox worldwide.”EA Technology is a patented method for creating toner using an environmentally-friendly chemical process. Using nanotechnology, the process for Xerox’s EA Technology starts with making nanometer-sized polymeric particles and other toner ingredients, followed by controlled growth of these
particles to micron-sized toner of exact size and shape. This enables xerographic equipment to output images with quality similar to offset colour
printing. The CATAAlliance Innovation and Leadership Awards are the most prestigious annual awards given to individuals and corporations by Canada’s
advanced technology community. They are presented in recognition of exceptional contributions made to the creation of science and technology-based industrial strength in Canada.
Xerox Corporation operates research and technology centers in the United States, Canada and Europe that conduct work in colour science, computing, digital imaging, work practices, electromechanical systems, novel materials
and other disciplines connected to Xerox’s expertise in printing and document management. The company consistently builds its inventions into business by
embedding them in superior Xerox products and solutions, using them as the foundation of new businesses, or licensing or selling them to other entities.
