NIGERIAN AUTHORITIES NAB 23,000 COUNTERFEIT CARTRIDGES
The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the police has confiscated more than 23 000 illegal cartridge toner products in a series of raids targeted at several companies in Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria. During the raid, two suspects were arrested.The raid led to seizure of thousands of fake laser and inkjet print cartridges, as well as security labels and packaging machines for assembling printing supplies.
Speaking at the launch of the Hewlett Packard (HP) Toner Cartridge Authentication programme in Lagos, Omolara Okunlola, SON assistant director, reiterated their commitment in combating counterfeit products in the country.Okunlola says in order to effectively enforce the rules guiding standards in the country, the supermarkets and major shopping centres need to register to ensure their products conform to the necessary requirements.“In line with the directives, the organisation has introduced a policy called ‘certificate of free use’, which ensures that imported products conform to the international standards and are the same as those used in that same country,” says Okunlola.
Sherifa Hady, HP Africa Marketing Manager for imaging and printing group, referred to the recent anti-piracy consortium report, which estimated that annual global economic and social impact of piracy is at $775 billion and to reach $1.7 trillion by 2015.Hady added that counterfeiting drains an estimated amount of €600 billion, about 5.7% annually from the global economy and loss of 2.5 million jobs across the G20 countries.
