The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad was called to downtown Modesto on Wednesday for a suspicious object that turned out to be a toner cartridge.
The black cylindrical object was found at about 1:30 p.m. in an alley on I Street between 11th and 12th streets, wedged between a building and a metal cage that houses its gas line.
The building is across the street from the courthouse and houses several businesses including the restaurant Firkin and Fox.
The businesses were evacuated for about 90 minutes. One of the the primary concerns was the object’s proximity to a gas line.
A sheriff’s deputy walked up to the device dressed in a bomb suit and helmet and used a portable X-ray machine to determine it was a toner cartridge.
