OUTSOURCED : CANON TO BUILD NEW INKJET PLANT IN THAILAND
* Factory to come online in October 2011
* Canon to expand production at existing factory
TOKYO,
Sept 2010- Canon Inc plans to build a 15 billion yen ($175 million)
inkjet printer plant in Thailand amid soaring demand in Asia, the
Japanese camera and office equipment maker said on Tuesday.
Canon’s
second Thai inkjet printer factory, due to start production in October
2011, will be located in the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima
and will employ about 5,000 workers, the firm said.Churning out mostly
low-priced products, it will have an annual production capacity of 5.5
million units. The company, which currently makes inkjet printers in
Thailand and Vietnam, said it opted for Thailand because of an abundance
of workers and to take advantage of synergies with its existing plant.
Canon
also plans to hike production at its existing Thai facility to 8
million units next year from 6 million this year, hiking its total
inkjet printer production capacity to 27 million units from the current
19.5 million. The new Thai facility has room for another building and if
demand for inkjet printers continues to grow, a second line could begin
operating there around 2016, Canon said.
The company is the
world’s second-largest maker of inkjet printers after Hewlett-Packard Co
of the United States, the Nikkei business daily quoted research firm
IDC as saying.Driven by booming Chinese and southeast Asian economies,
global demand for inkjet printers is expected to hit almost 91 million
units in 2013, swelling 18 percent from 2009, the paper said.Tokyo-based
Canon took over Dutch printer maker Oce NV this year to strengthen its
product lineup and broaden its distribution channels.
