The Malaysian ministry of education supported 500 IT students from six national universities through technology giant HP's software testing programme.

The students from Universiti Teknologi Mara, University of Malaya, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, International Islamic University Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Pahang and Universiti Putra Malaysia received their certificates of completion of the HP Software Testing Programme in Kuala Lumpur.

Licensed by HP and managed by Technology Education Leader (TEL), the programme prepared the undergraduate IT students for a career as software testing professionals, which is experiencing a talent shortfall, according to the Malaysian Software Testing Board [MSTB].

Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) deputy vice chancellor, industrial linkages, community and alumni network, Professor Dr Norsaadah Ismail, said the students would also receive assistance with job placements in the industry while their progress would be tracked to help develop a pool of expert testers in the industry.

"Spearheading this programme is in line with UiTM's vision to upgrade the knowledge and skills of graduates in the fields they have selected. Initiatives like this HP Software Testing Programme help the university produce graduates with enriched skills that help them compete on a global platform with strong and good work ethics," said Prof Dr Norsaadah.

HP Software Asia Pacific and Japan's vice president, professional services, Rajesh Prabhakaran, said: "With the rapid proliferation of mobile access devices, the opportunities for application developers have multiplied many times over. And with testing now being incorporated into agile development practices, quality is becoming a critical element of any software development effort. This is further confirmed by the placement data that we see of students who have gone through this programme."

The HP Software Testing Programme is a result of a 2009 memorandum of agreement signing between UiTM, HP and TEL, which was witnessed by the then Minister of Higher Education, said Prabhakaran. Since its introduction, 800 IT undergraduate students have been trained and as of March 2013, 87 percent of these students have been placed in software testing related jobs.

Entrepreneurship programme

Prabhakaran said that next year, UiTM, TEL and HP plan to expand the programme to additional national universities as well as to introduce a technopreneurship programme to identify current and past students who can be guided to become entrepreneurs in software testing.

"The success of this programme could not have happened without the close collaboration of all parties involved," said Technology Education Leader chairman Datuk Ibrahim Thambychik.

"Most notable was the support from the government, without which we could not have moved forward," he said. "The presence of the deputy minister of Finance and Ketua Setiausaha from the Ministry of Education is testament of this support and cooperation."

"Our aim is to interest more universities to participate, especially those in Sabah, Sarawak and Trengganu," said Ibrahim. "Hopefully, next year onwards, we will be able to train 1,000 students yearly and start our first technopreneurship programme with UiTM."

The six-week long HP Software Testing Program is conducted upon completion of the undergraduate degree and prior to job placements of the students. As part of the curriculum, students are offered hands-on training on four of HP's best-selling software tools, which are:

    LoadRunner
    Performance Centre
