Philippines : 12 People Nabbed For Counterfeiting Fake Toner Cartridges
MANILA, Philippines — Around P18.4 million worth of fake information technology (IT) products were seized from 12 suspected counterfeiters arrested in raids by the South East Asia Anti-Counterfeit (SEA-ACF) Team and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) across Metro Manila.

Authorities revealed that the 12 suspects were nabbed for allegedly manufacturing and distributing the counterfeit products of a global IT corporation to retail outlets and end users in the National Capital Region (NCR).

Hewlett Packard (HP), an American multinational information technology corporation which specializes in developing and manufacturing computing, data storage, and networking hardware, designing software and delivering services, considered this as the biggest raid of counterfeit HP products to be recovered by local operatives during the past several years.

Among the fake HP products that were recovered were 16,656 finished inks, 183 finished toners, 613 unfinished toners, 3,237 unfinished ink cartridges, 22 toner flat packages as well as ink filling machines and other counterfeiting equipment and components.

HP disclosed that that latest crackdown adds to the string of raids conducted in the country. In 1006, authorities confiscated P9.6 million worth of fake HP products, while in 2009, P4.7 million worth of products were seized.

To date, the total amount of confiscated HP inks and toners in the country has reached P32.7 million.

With this, Armando Pascual, country general manager of the Imaging and Printing Group of HP Philippines, vowed to further intensify its campaign against counterfeit products. “HP is committed to provide the best, high quality products to our consumers. We do not want them to be deceived by unscrupulous traders who sell fake inks and toners branded as HP,” he said.

In partnership with Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), HP will launch its campaign that seeks to raise public awareness on the proliferation of counterfeit goods like HP inks and toners as well as Philippine peso bills, dubbed, “No to Fakes. Know the Original.”

For its part, the BSP has likewise introduced several new security features in its new generation Philippine banknotes, while HP initiated genuine security seal features on its original HP Ink cartridges and toners.

HP bared that there are three ways of validating original HP ink and toner. These are through examining the label, identifying the HP mobile authentication via QR code and validating the new security label online.

HP also stated that holographic properties make it easy to differentiate an original HP from a counterfeit. Along with making sure that packaging looks new and undamaged and purchasing from only reputable retailers and resellers.

“We will continue to actively educate our consumers on how to spot fakes from the originals to empower them as anti-counterfeit citizen advocates,” Pascual said.

He added that HP, alongside BSP, continues to protect the Filipinos from counterfeiters by working closely with police authorities.
