HP Original Toners Better Than Remanufactured Toners
oct
2008 Manila, Philippines — Following the release of a study on HP
InkJet ink cartridges conducted by TÃœV SÃœD PSB last year,
Hewlett-Packard announces the findings of yet another successful
comparative cartridge testing for Asia Pacific—this time for toners.Conducted
by technical test organization QualityLogic, the findings show that
Original HP LaserJet Toner Cartridges can produce an average of 25.7%
more pages, categorized as acceptable for all uses, as compared to Asia
Pacific brands of remanufactured toner cartridges that were tested. With
regards to reliability, the findings revealed that one in every four
remanufactured cartridges in Asia Pacific were found dead on arrival
(DOA) or failed prematurely (FP), compared to Original HP Cartridges
that had no such reliability issues during testing.Remanufactured
toner cartridges were found to have reliability and print quality
issues, which were found to have an extremely high failure rate. Almost
one in ten or 9.7% were either dead on arrival or failed prematurely,
and 15.3% of the samples tested had half of total printed pages limited
or without use.Key Findings
• Reliability – Problem Cartridges
o
When combining all problem categories, HP LaserJet toner cartridges
exhibited no reliability failures in the study, compared to an average
of 25.0% for all remanufactured brands in the study.
• Print Quality Page Distribution
o
HP LaserJet toner cartridges printed an average of 96.1% of sample
pages categorized as acceptable for all uses, compared to 70.4% for the
average of remanufactured brands tested.Details about the study
HP
commissioned QualityLogic to conduct a study to evaluate the print
quality page distribution and reliability of HP branded LaserJet toner
cartridges versus 3 brands of remanufactured toner cartridges from the
Asia Pacific region. The study was completed in June 2008. For
testing, HP 10a and HP 42a black toner cartridges were used on HP
LaserJet 2300 and HP LaserJet 4350 printers.A total of 24
cartridges (HP10A and HP42A) were tested for each brand in the study
(12 each for the LaserJet 2300 and 4350 platforms). Printing was
performed in a continuous mode with the following test pages: Page 1 –
Business Letter, Page 2 – Spreadsheet, Page 3 – Presentation Slide, and
Page 4 – Flyer. All test pages were printed using standard 8 ½ x 11
office paper.Cartridge print quality page distribution was
determined by inspecting a sample of approximately 170 pages taken at
periodic intervals over the lifespan of each cartridge. The scale used
for grading sampled pages was created using data from a psychometric
research study of business laser printing users.QualityLogic
page inspectors categorized each of the sampled pages based on overall
print quality, using the scale created from the psychometric study
data. The inspectors were trained using the 40 page psychometric page
set. The consistency of grades across inspectors was monitored on a
daily basis and retraining against the psychometric page set, with
known scale values, was repeated as necessary. -
