Police Called in as 1000 Chinese Workers from Konica Minolta Go On Strike
20 people arrested at strike in Dalian
Nearly 1,000 Chinese workers from Konica Minolta Opto Company in Dalian in China's northeastern Liaoning province launched a strike on May 19 which lasted three days and resulted in 20 protesters being arrested by local authorities, reports Boxun, a Chinese-language citizen journalism site that is sourced mostly by anonymous users and frequently makes claims that are difficult to prove.

According to one Chinese internet user, the reason for the strike was that the company was trying to dismiss some of its workers before their contracts were up. They gathered outside the regulatory commission to demand an explanation from the company, however, police officers were called and mobilized to suppress them on May 21. Many protesters including women were said to have been beaten, and nearly 20 were reportedly arrested.

One of the workers said that all the workers dismissed from the company were only given one-month's salary as severance pay, and because most of them are middle-aged men and women, they will find it hard to get other jobs. Some of the workers attributed the perceived indifference of the company to the livelihood of its workers, to the fact that the company is Japanese-run.
