Printer Sales in Taiwan Drop 9.7% in Q1. 2012

Taipei, June , 2012 –Sales of printers in Taiwan, including SFPs (single-function printers) and MFPs (multifunctional printers), reached 135,770 units in the first quarter of 2012, down 9.7% quarter-on-quarter (QoQ, from 150,314 units in the fourth quarter of 2011), and down 15.9% year-on-year (YoY), according to the IDC Taiwan.

IDC Taiwan`s latest Quarterly SFP and MFP Tracker report attributes the sales decline to mainly the continued weak demand from the previous quarter.

The mainstream inkjet MFP shipments totaled only 96,039 units, down 14.9 % QoQ from 112,804 units, and an 15.8% YoY decline. Inkjet MFPs accounted for about 70% of the overall inkjets in the period (75% in the previous quarter)/

Some 39,7331 inkjet SFPs were sold in the first quarter, compared to 37,510 in the fourth quarter, up 5.9% QoQ but still a 16.7% YoY decrease.

Emma Liu, Associate Market Analyst of, PC & Peripherals Group at IDC Taiwan, pointed out that shipments of inkjet printers in Taiwan have been shrinking in conjunction with the increasing popularity of laser printers, and makers have been trying to launch new products meeting various requirements. In the gradually phasing-out inkjet SFP segment, makers have in-turn pushed models with high printing volume capability. As a results, she added, the SFP sales volume enjoyed a QoQ increase.
