Ricoh Announces More Layoffs at Choconut Center Facility

TOWN OF UNION — Ricoh Production Print Solutions plans to lay off 22 people at its Choconut Center facility by the end of July.

That’s according to a WARN notice the company filed with the state Labor Department this week.Ricoh spokesman Peter Lazaroff said the company also is laying off some workers in Boulder, Colo., where the company has a large presence. Cutting costs and increasing efficiencies to remain competitive are the reasons for the layoffs at both sites. He wouldn’t discuss layoff numbers, citing company policy.

In New York, the state Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act requires businesses that meet certain conditions to give early warning of closing and layoffs and to provide specifics.

Ricoh told the state the layoffs at Airport Corporate Center in Choconut Center will occur in two rounds: 11 employees will be laid off May 31; the other half on July 31.

The timing of the layoffs is based on business needs, Lazaroff said. The facility had about 75 employees at the end of last year.

Locally, Ricoh performs light manufacturing and integration of high-end printers that other companies use to print high-volume documents such as invoices and credit card statements. The facility also re-manufactures products that come back from customers and then sells them on the re-use market.

Work performed by the laid off workers will be moved to Tustin, Calif.-based Ricoh Electronics Inc., which does similar work, Lazaroff said.

Meanwhile, unemployment remains high in Broome and Tioga counties. The region’s jobless rate was 8.2 percent in December, according to the Labor Department. The department is scheduled to release the figure for January next week.

Ricoh Co. Ltd., based in West Caldwell, N.J., announced about a year ago realignment of its production print resources with the formation of Ricoh Production Print Solutions. RPPS incorporated InfoPrint Solutions and the Ricoh Production Printing Business Group’s marketing and planning resources from Japan. InfoPrint was originally a printer division for IBM
