Ricoh Collecting Back Old Printers & Copiers In Malaysia

Firm believes in collecting back old printers and copiers for recycling

KUALA LUMPUR OFFICE equipment company Ricoh (M) Sdn Bhd is targeting double digit growth this year while maintaining its green effort to promote its landfill-free system.

The company has been operating using its green technology since 15 years ago and is one of the pioneers of incorporating environmentalfriendly solutions to recycle its printers, said chief operating officer Peter Wee in an interview.

He said the company designs and manufactures its printers and copiers in such a way that they are easy to dismantle and crush by machines for recycling purposes.

From 2008 to 2010, it produced 292 tonnes of photocopying machines, 38 tonnes of toner cartridges and bottles and five tonnes of spare parts.

“This way, we will not fill up the landfills as our technical supporters will collect the printers and copiers from customers and take them to a recycling facility. From that, we are able to make new printers out of the ones we sold.”

He said it takes a lot of mindset shift for companies to include an environmentalfriendly solutions into their systems. Ricoh spends about RM10,000 a month to collect used toner cartridges and pays a recycling centre to process the used products.

“Companies need to realise that its not all about profit. While sustaining a business, one must not forget about the environment.”

Wee said this year the company is focusing on its small and medium enterprises (SMEs) market to further expand its reach.

“We introduced out affordable laser jet printers mainly for SMEs in June 2012 and we are confident of our new line of products to reach out to this sector. We initiated this programme because we realise how much the SMEs make up a big portion of the business in Malaysia and we want to cater to them.”

He said Ricoh is launching more laser jet 10 printers in the next six months to increase brand awareness towards the SMEs.

Besides producing printers and copiers, Ricoh is also venturing into office consulting services offering office cabling, infrastructure, maintenance and also its closedcircuit television business.

“To take our green effort further, we try to convince our clients to only purchase minimal devices, which is why it is important for us to venture into new businesses to sustain our revenue.”
