Ricoh Complaint Over Printer Imports Gets U.S. Trade Review
Oct. 09 — Ricoh Co.’s complaint seeking to bar an Oki Electric Industry Co. unit from importing and selling printing and imaging devices that infringe its technology won review by U.S. trade officials. The U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington today said it would investigate the complaint brought last month by Ricoh, the Japanese maker of cameras and office equipment.“By instituting this investigation, the USITC has not yet made any decision on the merits of the case,” the agency said in a statement. The agency, set up to protect U.S. markets from unfair trade practices, has the power to order a ban on imports that violate local patents.

Ricoh also filed a lawsuit last month against Oki in federal court in Wilmington, Delaware. Ricoh contends the Oki unit is making and importing products including the Oki C3530n printing, copying and scanning device in violation of eight Ricoh patents.

The ITC complaint seeks to prevent Oki products from entering the U.S.
The ITC case is In the Matter of Certain Printing and Imaging Devices and Components Thereof, 337-TA-690, U.S. International Trade Commission (Washington). The lawsuits are Ricoh Co. Ltd. v. Okidata Corp., 09CV694 and 09CV695, U.S. District Court, District of Delaware (Wilmington).
